Drive yourself to Wildman Wilderness Lodge

gettingtowildman!.pngWildman Wilderness Lodge is an easy 170km drive from Darwin or 220km from Jabiru. The main road that takes you to Wildman is called the Arnhem Highway. Google maps will tell you it’s around 2.5hrs from Darwin but it’s more like 2 hours without stops and doing the speed limit of course.

To get onto the Arnhem Highway out of Darwin, follow the Stuart Highway (1). Shortly after passing Coolalinga you will see the sign for Humpty Doo/Jabiru on your left. This is the Arnhem Highway (Route 36) turn off which you will now follow for about the next 1 – 1.5hrs.

Along the Arnhem Highway we’ve listed below a couple of stops in case you want to fill your day in:

  1. Humpty Doo Tavern
  2. Fogg Dam
  3. Pudakul Indigenous Tours
  4. Windows on the Wetlands
  5. Jumping Crocodile Cruises
  6. Purple Mango Café
  7. Corroboree Park Tavern and Service station
  8. Bird Billabong

Once you pass Corrobboree Tavern and then the Bark Hut Inn (shut down at the time of writing – 2017), you take a left down Point Stuart Road, you are now on the homeward run. Follow Point Stuart for about 20-30 minutes until you reach the Wildman turn off, you will see the sign.

The Arnhem Highway is a bitumen road all the way and is a good quality and easy to navigate road. It is well suited to 2-wheel drive cars, although in the wet season (November to April) the Adelaide River crossing and surrounding area can tend to get a little flooded, especially if there has been heavy rainfall.  During the dry season (May – October) this is not an issue.

Once you reach the Wildman Wilderness Lodge turn off, there is only 7km to go and this private access road is a regularly graded dirt road. It is suitable for a 2-wheel drive, 4- wheel drive, bus and caravan.

Things to watch out for along the way include birds, kangaroos/wallabies and cattle. You may also spot the odd dingo. The best time to drive is during the day, avoiding sunrise and sunset when the animals tend to come out because it’s cooler and this is when they do their main feeding.

For all NT road and traffic rules and regulations, check the following government website. Happy journeys and we will see you at Wildman Wilderness Lodge.
